New York

I’ve arrived in New York for a buying trip (which will also include West Palm Beach) and I’ll be filling a container with one-off treasures. While here I’m staying at the Gramercy Park Hotel and with the wonderful Michelle Adams of Lonny mag. The Gramercy Park Hotel is, in a word, spectacular – Bohemian beauty in a truly contemporary context – and a far cry from the neutral tones you find in most luxury hotels. The GPH also has the most incredible collection of art, with works from Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst and George Condo to name just a few. You can view them here at www.artgph.com.

Park Life

Just had breakfast and coffee in Gramercy Park, a private garden that’s accessible only by key (the hotel lent me theirs!). Serene, sunny and sublimely quiet, the park is the perfect place to kick back with an almond croissant, an espresso and a copy of the Times. Gramercy Park was created by visionary developer Samuel Ruggles, who wanted to create an oasis amid the hustle and bustle of the city. A walk along its paths reveals some of NYC’s architectural gems, including The Player’s Club, the Gothic revival National Arts Club, the Stuyvesant Fish House and 36 Gramercy Park East, a stunning neo-Gothic structure.

When it comes to interior décor, blue can be a colour that many people shy away from. It has a bit of a bad rep for being cold and uninviting, but when it’s used in the right shades, in the right light, AND in the right proportions (relative to other elements in the room), it can look exceptionally chic.

Q: What’s red & shiny, and to die for?
A: So many things!

I’m not sure why, but there’s something about shiny & red that really works. I think it’s glamorous and sexy, bold and beautiful. As if scarlet red wasn’t sexy enough, with a coat of shine on it, it’s just irresistible! Think Chanel nail polish in midnight red, scarlet lipstick, Louboutin soles, slick red sportscars… you get the picture!

There have been some stunning shots of interiors featuring red lacquered walls published in numerous magazines over recent years, and I must say that I continue to love the look. Beautiful!

One of my favourite colour combinations is gold & white. Clean, crisp white and rich, opulent gold seem to work especially well together – creating a fresh and contemporary look whilst evoking some old school glamour. To all of you who are hosting parties and family get-togethers this holiday, I am sending you all my best wishes and encouragement for a happy and stress-free time. They say that the key to being a great hostess is some serious organisation…. Although perhaps I would add that it’s important not to take things too seriously!

I saw this photo from Lonny in my files – look at all that china and serviceware all stacked up, organised and ready to party… beautiful, isn’t it? Let’s see if it inspires us all to let our inner Martha shine.

Traditional Home magazine, the stalwart of classic American home design magazines, and Lonny, the fresh and fabulous e-magazine, have joined forces to create a new online publication: Trad Home.

Trad Home will be launched online in May 2011 and we can’t wait to see how Lonny’s Michelle Adams and Patrick Cline & the Trad Home team work their magic. No doubt it will be a huge success – with such impeccable parentage, how could it not be?!
